The LHS wrestling team sent five team members to the Individual State Finals at The University of Illinois on Feb. 19-21, along with sending the entire team down to the Dual Team State Finals at the U.S. Cellular Coliseum in Bloomington on Feb. 28.

The Tom-Tom was able to catch up with Head Wrestling Coach John St. Clair.

Tom-Tom (TT): How long have you been coaching the LHS wrestling team?

St. Clair: I have been the head coach for 12 years.

TT: How did you become interested in coaching the wrestling team?

St. Clair: I wrestled growing up and got involved in coaching at my old high school when I graduated college.

TT: Which six wrestlers competed as individuals at the IHSA Class 2A Individual State Finals? How did each competitor do?

St. Clair: Our state qualifiers are:  Ryan Glynn with a record of 28-15, Egan Berta 41-11, Jimmy Brennan 32-7, Jake Kirkman 36-10, Dimitri Giatras 27-22 and John Polk 33-15.

TT: What has each of those individuals achieved this past season?

St. Clair: Berta and Polk were only one match away from placing and Brennan was the only other person that won a match. They were all regional champions, while Berta, Kirkman and Brennan were all returning state qualifiers. Brennan has qualified three times.

TT:  What growth have you seen amongst the members of your team as individuals and teammates?

St Clair: The reason we had success at the end of the season is because the entire team put in the hard work it takes to be successful in wrestling.  Each individual got better as the season went on which obviously made us a better team.

TT: How did the team do this past weekend at the 2015 IHSA Class 2A Wrestling Dual Team State Finals?

St Clair: We are only the fourth team in school history to go to team state. We wrestled Crystal Lake Central and lost the dual, but won as many matches as we lost. We competed and wrestled hard down there but couldn’t avoid giving up bonus points.

TT: What was the team’s record this season? How do you hope to improve for next year?

St Clair: We finished the season with a .500 record and will look to improve on that mark next year with the influx of some experienced incoming freshman. I also hope to get kids on the team that weren’t on the team this past year that should have been and encourage all my guys to work hard in the off season.

The LHS wrestling team set records this year by being the fourth wrestling team to go down to State in LHS history. The Indians have given upcoming teams a hard act to follow after the 2014-2015 teams performance this past season.
