Lemont High School senior Danny Dirst was chosen by the Chicago Blackhawks to be highlighted in their “High School Captain” spotlight series.

As a candidate for this honor, Dirst sent in an application to the spotlight series and provided recommendations from his coaches.

Dirst has played hockey since he was five years old, playing for the Naperville Sabres until high school, where he moved on to play for the Lemont/Lockport Spartans.

As part of the spotlight series, Dirst was gifted two tickets to the Blackhawks’ game against the Florida Panthers on Feb. 24.

According to Chicago Blackhawks Youth Hockey, “The Captain Spotlight is a new youth hockey initiative that features four local high school hockey captains per month. These captains are invited to a Blackhawks game and are interviewed on the defining characteristics of what makes a good leader. With the Illinois High School Hockey Championships coming up in March, Blackhawks Youth Hockey wanted to take a closer look at what it takes to be captain of a high school hockey team.”

For the spotlight series, Dirst arrived early to the game on Feb. 24 and was interviewed by the spotlight series which is featured on “Blackhawks TV.”

According to Dirst, “This recognition has to be one of my greatest achievements I have received so far from playing hockey.”

Dirst is the varsity captain for the Lemont/Lockport Spartans which includes students from both Lemont and Lockport High School.

As captain, Dirst has grown as a person and a player. Being a shy person, the leadership opportunity for Dirst has required him to be more vocal and has become a more well-rounded player on and off the ice.

Dirst is a large proponent of the aspect team and hopes to not only stand as a leader to his teammates, but a role model.

While Dirst has played hockey since he was little, he is unsure if he will pursue hockey beyond high school. Dirst will be attending Illinois State University in the fall of 2015 and will be majoring in sales and marketing.
